In this class you’ll create a vibrant, mixed media hummingbird artwork using torn paper collage and acrylic paint.

We will begin with a loose, playful painting process to create a colourful initial layer on the canvas and prepare it for collage. You will also create a few of your own painted collage papers.

We’ll then move into the torn paper collage process to define your hummingbird and add detail to the artwork by selecting, tearing, and layering painted and patterned papers. We’ll finish the piece with a few flourishes using paint and paint pens. You’ll leave with a finished artwork.

This class is perfect for beginners (no experience required!) or for artists looking to learn about torn paper collage. All materials are provided, and the day includes a 30-minute break.

Instructor: Cara Leanne is a mixed-media artist from the Comox Valley, known for her bright and cheerful paintings. Hand-painted paper collage features prominently in much of her work, adding unique texture and detail. Cara's whimsical artwork is often inspired by the beauty of flowers, peaceful seascapes, and even quirky chickens.
